Journal Title: International Journal of Medical and Health Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is a serious problem and its incidence in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is still rising. Knowledge and awareness of women about breast cancer is important for prevention and early detection of the disease. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge and awareness about breast cancer among primary health care centers (PHCCs) attendees in Al-Khobar city, Eastern Saudi Arabia, and to determine associated factors. Materials and Methods: The study population consisted of female PHCCs attendees in Al-Khobar city. Out of a total of eight PHCCs, two were selected by simple random sampling. The study sample was 400 women. Interviewer-administered questionnaire was constructed and was administered to the attendees by the first author under standardized conditions. Data was analyzed using SPSS software. Results: Seventy per cent of attendees (280) had information about breast cancer. Only 162 (40.5%) women knew that breast mass is a symptom of breast cancer. More than half of the sample knew what breast selfexamination is (54.5%). Most of the attendees 340 (85.0%) were aware of mammogram but 359 (89.8%) didn’t perform it. A total of 275 (68.8%) women knew that mammogram must be done after 35 years of age. A good knowledge and awareness score of the female attendees (58.8% and 66.8% respectively) was found. Conclusion: Despite that female attendees had a good knowledge and awareness about breast cancer, most of them didn’t know the mammogram and they did not practice it. Setting a national screening program is needed.
