Knowledge and Practice about Car Safety in Kingdom of Bahrain

Journal Title: IOSR Journal of Dental and Medical Sciences (IOSR-JDMS) - Year 2017, Vol 16, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction: Each year, more than 20 million people are injured and 1.17 million are killed due to road traffic accidents. The objectives of this study were to assess knowledge and practice towards car safety among people in the kingdom of Bahrain. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted in different areas in Bahrain during July and August of 2013. Data was analyzed using SPSS, Qi-Square and T-test. Results: A total number of 427 people participated in this study. Approximately 253(59.3%) of the participant had been involved in one or more than one road traffic accident. 140(32.8%) participant didn’t know the exact age that requires a car seat. The study results showed that 63.2% of people believe that driving attitude is the most common cause of car accidents. Conclusion: Study participants had high knowledge about car safety but moderate attitudes. Married people had decreased knowledge toward the age that requires a car seat. The age group of 18-29 years tends to use cell phones more often while driving, whichmeans that they have a low level of practice. We recommended the General Department Of Traffic to raise awareness, increase fines of violations, and increase the age by which a license is given.
