LA PENURIE D’EAU DANS LES PAYS ARABES ET LA NECESSITE DE L’UTILISATION DES EAUX NON CONVENTIONNELLES
Journal Title: Larhyss Journal - Year 2010, Vol 8, Issue 8
Abstract
The great stake with which is confronted the Arab world is to be able to produce more food with a minimum water. The Arab population accounts for 4.3% of the world total but has only 0.63% of the renewable water resources, of which the half is extern origin, given potentials conflicts. The renewable water resources (RWR) estimated at 278 cubic km offer an annual ration to each individual of 583 cubic m. These resources are concentrated in some countries, which exposes the great majority of the population to the water stress. A share of 180 cubic km is 65% of the renewable resources. These volumes distributed on the population gives a ratio of 421 cubic meters per year, a volume which arrives decreased to the user due to bad management. A share of 70% of this volume is used in irrigation without much effect on the agricultural production which remains weak and insufficient. This situation of stress has constrained several countries to choose the use of no conventional water. The management of water is thus directly related to food safety. Within the framework of the agricultural production, there are many possibilities of increase in the productivity of water thanks to a rigorous management using the projections of the agronomic research. The agricultural outputs of the irrigated grounds can be improved while gaining in hydraulic efficiency of use.
