Land Use and Vegetation Mapping Of Tropical Forests Using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques: A Review

Abstract

Proper planning, management and monitoring of the natural resources depend on the availability of accurate land use information. Over the years, remote sensing has been used for land use/land cover mapping in different part of the India. There is an alarming threat to life supporting systems on planet earth due to rapid declining of diversity and complexity of living organisms. Land cover and vegetation were spatially analyzed by digitally classifying IRS 1D LISS III satellite data using maximum likelihood algorithm. The over storey data was collected by randomly laying five sample plots (20 x 20 m) in different forest types. Similarly five quadrates for understorey and ground vegetation with 5 x 5 m and 1 x 1 m were laid each forest type. The trees, shrubs and herbs were enumerated for their gbh/dbh and height in sampling plots. The slope, aspect TIN and DEM maps were derived through terrain analysis of topographic data in GIS environment. Both satellite remote sensing and GIS techniques are currently emerged as efficient and powerful tools for characterization of land use and vegetation in tropics. Remote sensing satellite data provides reliable and unbiased information on different land use features, their spatial extent and also dynamic properties. On the other hand, GIS techniques complement the remote sensing by the way of spatially integrating different satellite derived thematic maps with ancillary data through overlay procedures.
