Language and Literacy Development among Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Journal Title:  Journal of Childhood & Developmental Disorders - Year 2017, Vol 3, Issue 3

Abstract

Autism, which involves deficits in language development and social interaction, has received an increasing amount of attention in recent years. Research has identified that children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) often exhibit difficulties in language acquisition, literacy development, and social interaction. Although extensive studies have been conducted to characterize deficits in language and social skills among children with ASD, research on the literacy development of this group is still sparse. In this editorial, we provide a brief overview about the language and literacy impairments that are common amongst children with ASD. We also argue for two under-researched areas: emergent literacy skills and the home literacy environment, both of which play essential roles in the language and literacy development of children with ASD.
