Laparoscopic splenectomy

Journal Title: Ege Tıp Dergisi - Year 2014, Vol 53, Issue 2

Abstract

Aim: Laparoscopic splenectomy has become the preferred surgical procedure for the elective splenectomy. In this study, our experience with laparoscopic splenectomy was presented. Materials and Methods: The files of patients who underwent laparoscopic splenectomy were reviewed retrospectively. Diagnosis, operation finding and follow-up information were recorded. Results: Laparoscopic splenectomy was performed in 31 (17 women, 14 men) patients. The operation time was 60- 150 (mean: 102.6) minutes. Conversion to laparotomy was necessary in three patients. In one patient who had massive splenomegalia, a small left subcostal incision was made to aid in removal of the spleen. In two patients, accessory spleen were seen and resected. During follow up four paitents had idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura thrombocyte levels that did not increase. In one of those patients, an accessory spleen was detected and resected with a second operation. There were no morbidity and mortality. Conclusion: It is concluded that laparoscopic splenectomy is a safe and effective method for elective splenectomy.
