Laparoscopic total extraperitoneal mesh repair for recurrent Inguinal Hernia: a two year experience
Journal Title: The Indian Practitioner - Year 2016, Vol 69, Issue 4
Abstract
Inguinal Hernia is the commonest form of hernia in man and a common surgical problem.1 Different repairs have different recurrence rate which also depends on surgeon expertise.1,2,3 As per the current literature there is no significant difference in the recurrence rate of open and laparoscopic repair provided the surgeon has expertise in laparoscopic repair.2,3 Before the advent of laparoscopic hernia repair recurrence of open repairs were operated in the same open approach. The result being higher recurrence rate as dissection in previously scarred tissue would not allow identification of facial planes.1-4 In a recurrent hernia posterior (preperitoneal) approach is advisable if the previous surgery has been performed anteriorly and vice versa.3 The principle in recurrent hernia surgery is to approach it through a virgin plane.1-3 A laparoscopic repair is recommended for the recurrence of a primary open repair.4-6
