LAUGHTER AGAINST FEAR (ABOUT UNRENOWNED NOVEL BY G. CHEVALLIER «FEAR» («LA PEUR»)

Abstract
The article deals with problem and poetological analysis of the understudied novel by French writer G. Chevallier «Fear», («La Peur», 1930). The novel is studied against a background of French antiwar prose (H. Barbusse, J.-R. Bloch, J. Giono, M. Genevoix, R. Rolland and others) and it is so in the context of creative works by G. Chevallier himself as well. The analysis demonstrated that the antimilitary position of characters of the novel «Fear» turns out to be ambivalent: it hesitates between fatalistic obedience and a vain protest against the «organised nightmare» of the war. The means of denying the depersonalizing strategy of war, which turns a person into a «body-object», is a satirical-ironic and grotesque-parodic laughter (as a manifestation of «ratio») in the novel. A distinctive accent of the anti-war theme by G. Chevallier is the interpretation of the woman’s role as an «accomplice of war».
