Levels of Circulatory Endothelial Progenitor Cells and Gamma Glutamyltransferase in Ghanaians with Cardiovascular Disease

Journal Title: International Journal of Medical and Health Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 4

Abstract

Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) play a key role in the vascular pathology of stroke, congestive cardiac failure (CCF) and hypertension. Reduced numbers of circulating endothelial progenitor cells have been implicated in conditions where there is vascular injury including cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and myocardial infarction. The aim of this study was to investigate levels of circulating EPCs, some hematological and biochemical indices in patients with or without CVDs. Sixty (60) case subjects and 40 controls were included in this study. Six millilitres (6mls) of whole blood was drawn from each participant, for circulating endothelial progenitor cells (cEPCs), hematological and biochemical analysis. Levels of (cEPCs) were significantly (P=0.049) lower in CVDs (stroke: 0.70±0.42; CCF 0.89±0.24; and hypertension 0.81±0.36) compared with controls (1.24±0.95). Vitamin B-12 and high density lipoprotein (HDL) were also significantly lower in CVDs (stroke: 494.6±90.3; CCF: 484.1±90.7 hypertension 461.3±86.6 P=0.038) (stroke: 0.81±0.29; CCF: 0.84±0.31 hypertension 1.00±0.20; P=0.015) compared with controls (651.8±99.1 and1.20±0.32) respectively. However, GGT was significantly higher in CVDs (stroke: 62.2±28.7; CCF: 96.5±37.1 hypertension 56.9±27.4; P=0.019) compared with controls (41.8±26.0). Results from this study suggest that subjects with cardiovascular disease had lower cEPCs, HDL and Vitamin B-12 compared with controls.
