Lexical and Grammatical Peculiarities of Translating English Epithets

Abstract
The article deals with the ways of rendering epithets from English into Ukrainian in O. Wilde’s novel ''The Picture of Dorian Gray''. The author gives the analysis of the existing definitions of an epithet as a stylistic device, the analysis of classifications of epithets, worked out by A. Vesselovsky, L. Yefimov, I. Galperin. As the basis of the analysis the classification of I. Galperin was taken, as the most detailed and consistent. The results of the analysis showed that epithet, being translated, still preserves its expressivity and its adds to the integrity of perception and originality of the novel. The epithets under analysis (1992 cases) were subdivided into some groups according to their structure. The results of our research showed, that O. Wilde used mainly simple epithets (1804 cases) – rich odour of roses, the sullen murmur of the bess. Compound epithets are used much more seldom (158 cases) – dog-eared schoolbooks, stiff-fingered hands. The last and least group is inverted epithets – 29 cases – grace of movement, a beauty of a frame. As for their distribution the author uses chains of simple epithets (53 cases) – wrong, fascinatiry, poisonous, delightful theories. Into Ukrainian epithets can be translated as: – adjectives (1502 cases) – a dread orchestra, silly marriages;– (149 cases) – the wordy silence, her flower-like lip; – zero translation (119 cases) – poor dear mother, the exquisite temptation; – nouns (144 cases) – You are quite delightful!; – adverbs (67 cases) – sang divinely; – verbs (41 cases) – burning eyes.
