Abstract
This article outlines the role of lexical semantics in the process of lexical and semantic competence of the future philologists. It is pointed out, that vocabulary (the subject of lexicology) was traditionally understood as the autonomous language subsystem. Because of this fact the word was researched behind the context during a long period of time. Thus the problem of lexical semantics as the special component of the language description model coordinated with other component, which being as a whole provide speech ability of human being, was out of sight of lexicology in higher educational institutes. These points regularly caused the questions that traditional lexicology does not solve. Thus content plane of lexical item includes not only the lexical meaning but also pragmatic and syntactic information that represents the requests of this lexical item to the situational and language context. Taken together they are the point that is accepted to be called lexical and semantic information among the components of which such ones are singled out: significant, denotative, pragmatic. It is demonstrated that the effectiveness of philologist vocational training is mainly caused by the availability of new course books as the educational and scientific texts that adequately represent poly-paradigmatic space of modern linguistics and language as a mean of coding and decoding of certain information, and workbooks that determining the central status of linguistic semantics among linguistic disciplines of the academic cycle are focused on the formation of lexical and semantic competence of students-philologists via the awareness of the meaning word structure according to the communicative and pragmatic basics.
