Lhermitte-Duclos Disease: A Rare Lesion with Variable Presentations and Obscure Histopathology
Journal Title: Turkish Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 34, Issue 1
Abstract
Since Lhermitte-Duclos is a quite rare disorder with both neoplastic and hamartomatous features, clinical and pathological diagnosis can sometimes be challenging. For the pathologist it is of extreme importance to be aware of variable clinical and histopathological presentations of such a rare lesion particularly to differentiate it from the low-grade glial and neuronal tumors. We present four cases of Lhermitte-Duclos in a histopathological perspective. Although enlargement of the internal granular layer of the cerebellum is a consistent finding in our cases, morphological severity was highly variable and in some cases the enlargement was insignificant. Frozen sections of one case did not reveal diagnostic findings. The vacuolar change observed in the paraffin sections was obscure in the frozen. Pathological diagnosis of Lhermitte-Duclos disease can be extremely difficult in the absence of proper clinical information and the pathologist should be watchful for any irregularity in the internal granular layer in evaluating the cerebellar tissue which is otherwise normal.

Follicular-patterned thyroid lesions
Aim: Our aim is to determine the minimal cytopathologic criteria needed to make differential diagnosis in follicular-patterned lesions of the thyroid gland. Materials and Methods: We reviewed 56 fine needle aspiration c...
Can Cutting-Needle Biopsy Be an Alternative to Excisional Biopsy in Lymph Node Pathologies?
Objective: We aimed to compare cutting-needle biopsy (CNB) diagnoses with excisional biopsy diagnoses of enlarging lymph nodes and to determine the diagnostic value of CNB. Material and Method: Out of the 291 cases that...
Evaluation of Midkine Expression in Dentigerous Cysts, Odontogenic Keratocysts and Different Types of Ameloblastoma
Objective: Midkine is a heparin-binding growth factor whose expression is increased in most tumors, namely ameloblastomas. This study aimed to compare Midkine expression in different odontogenic lesions. Material and Me...
Subcutaneous Leiomyosarcoma Metastasized to the Lymph Nodes Involved with Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma / Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
Herein, we present a case of a 76-year-old Caucasian man with a very large fungating, ulcerating mass, involving the right neck and parotid area, which developed while he was being treated for chronic lymphocytic leukemi...
Needle core biopsies for renal masses and diagnostic difficulties
Aim: Renal needle core biopsies for mass lesions are being used frequently in advanced renal cell carcinoma or multipl mass lesions (e.g., primary renal cell carcinoma or metastatic renal mass). The problems and clues of...
