Life cycle assessment (LCA) of selected tomato packaging
Journal Title: CHEMIK nauka-technika-rynek - Year 2014, Vol 68, Issue 8
Abstract
The recent years have witnessed a rapid development of knowledge in the field of environmental protection. This reason has led to the realization that the impact of packaging on the environment should not be limited only to the waste phase. Therefore, eco designing, manufacturing and using of packaging underwent a serious of improvements in accordance to the principles of the sustainable development. Moreover, standards even higher than current rules and regulations are implemented in the fields of trade and production. An important tool in evaluating packaging and its impact on the environment is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The results of these assessments are creating new directions in the field of packaging design, with the inclusion of factors such as origin of the packaging material, usage of recycled resources, limiting of “carbon footprint” indicators (minimization of greenhouse gasses emission) etc. The LCA and “carbon footprint” evaluation of indicators performed in COBRO for selected types of thermoformed packaging are a step in finding the most beneficial solutions.
