LIGHT MICROSCOPIC STUDY OF EPITHELIAL HISTOGENESIS OF THE ACINI OF THE PAROTID GLAND
Journal Title: Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 24
Abstract
INTRODUCTION: The factor of epithelial origin of acini later in life contributes to the major proportion of salivary gland tumors having the histological basis of epithelial origin as compared to non- epithelial tumors of parotid gland, the latter contributing to only 2-5% of total SGTs (Salivary gland tumors). AIM: The aim of the study is to establish the importance of the epithelial origin of the acini of the parotid gland. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Light microscopic observations were made on 39 human fetuses in the present study to observe the histogenesis of the acini of the parotid gland. Sections were cut, stained and seen under light microscope. RESULTS: The epithelial origin of the acini was observed developing from solid clusters of cells initiating from the epithelial bud. CONCLUSION: The dominant epithelial factor of origin of the acini may in future contribute to the occurrence of epithelial tumors as major proportion (95 -98%) of the SGTs.
