Limnological features of Ikere Gorge Reservoir, Iseyin southwestern Nigeria: Physico-chemical parameters
Journal Title: Journal of Biodiversity and Environmental Sciences (JBES) - Year 2012, Vol 2, Issue 6
Abstract
A study of physico-chemical parameters of Ikere gorge reservoir Iseyin, South Western Nigeria was conducted from July to December 2007. The mean of the physico-chemicals parameters were; temperature (28.1 ± 0.730C), transparency (1.82 ± 0.66m), hydrogen ion concentration (7.26 ± 0.15), dissolved oxygen (7.07 ± 0.59 mg/l), biochemical oxygen demand (2.71 ± 0.66 mg/l), conductivity (344.44 ± 184.04 µΩ/cm), phosphate (1.68 ± 1.32mg/l), nitrate (0.74±1.01 mg/l), total suspended solid (34.66 ± 23.03 mg/l), and total dissolved solid (223.35 ± 80.44 mg/l). Significant differences were observed in the mean dissolved oxygen, conductivity and phosphate concentration between the stations. Only total dissolved solids differed significantly between seasons. The physico-chemical parameters obtained fall within the range for drinking water except for total suspended solid which exceeded the Federal Ministry of Environment’s (FME) recommendation for drinking water. Further purification of the water to remove excess total suspended solid will make the water fit for drinking. The reservoir is suitable for aquatic life.

Significance of pollination services in crop and plant diversity in tropical Africa
There exist diverse communities of plants in the tropics. These plants offer habitat to a number of insect pollinators that directly or indirectly play a significant role in sustaining tropical biodiversity through polli...
Investigation the role of industry in polluting the groundwater aquifers (Case study: Ardabil aquifer, Northwest of Iran)
A large part of water consumption in the world, especially in drinking part, provided from the groundwater resources. In many cases, groundwater pollution, is diagnosed when the decontamination of the aquifer is almost...
Comparison of butterfly diversity in natural and regenerating forest in a biodiversity conservation site at maragamuwa, Sri Lanka
Knowledge of species composition and diversity of butterflies offers great benefits for nature conservation and environmental monitoring. Butterfly species richness and diversity were studied at a biodiversity conservat...
Diversity and Distribution of Pachyrynchini (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Entiminae) in Mt. Apo Natural Park, Philippines
The tribe Pachyrynchini (Coleoptera:Curculionidae:Entiminae) with a Philippine centered distribution is poorly studied with mountains like Mt. Apo Natural Park less explored. A combination of belt transect, visual encoun...
Determination of the best method of estimating the time of concentration in pasture watersheds (case study: Banadak Sadat and Siazakh Watersheds, Iran)
Temporal parameters are used in most of hydrological and hydraulic models. The most common temporal parameter in hydrology is time of concentration which is required for spillway design, flood volume estimation, produc...
