LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF GREAT BRITAIN’S TOPONYMS

Abstract
The given article deals with structural and semantic features of Great Britain’s toponymy. The author examines those historical peculiarities of the English language development which influenced geographical proper names; classifies toponyms according to their etymology as well as investigates foreign elements within contemporary names structure. In the course of carried out research the author draws a conclusion that toponyms reflect the whole British Isles’ history and were formed under the influence of Latin, Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian and Norman-French. This fact, finally, yielded one common system of names.
