Abstract
Recidivists Are Chronic, Multiple Or Prolific Offenders. They Continue To Commit Crimes In Spite Of Punishment. Recidivism Is A Universal Problem Which Has Continued Over The Years. This Study On The Link Between Initial Punishments Offenders Receive For Their First Convictions, And Subsequent Reoffending Was Conducted In Nairobi County-Kenya. The Study Involved Recidivist Prisoners At Kamiti Maximum Security Prison And Langata Prison; Male And Female Institutions Respectively. A Sample Of 167 Participants Was Purposively Selected For The Study, And Data Collected By Use Of Questionnaires, Focus Group Discussions And Key Informant Interviews. Both Quantitative And Qualitative Techniques Were Further Employed In Data Analysis. The Study Established That There Is No Significant Link Between Punishment And Recidivism Since Other Factors Such As Poverty And Peer Pressure Among Many Others Are Largely Responsible For The Vice.
