Links Between Features of Problem-based Learning in Institution of Higher Education and Competences of Students

Abstract

When starting applying problem- based learning, it is important to be able not only to model the educational process itself, but also to foresee possible results. In theoretical discussion of scientists and practical experience of institutions, the revealed positive results of problem- based learning provide motivation for both lecturers attempting to adapt the educational innovation and students who start learning according to it. The links between features of problem- based learning and competences being developed revealed in the article generalise theoretical insights and practical experience, in addition, they serve as a starting point for a creative way of lecturers and students in implementation and improvement of problem- based learning in their institution of higher education. Systemic application of essential features of problem- based learning leads to achievements of students, which supplement and deepen competences gained during traditional studies. Organisation of (self-)education on complex problems of the real world, their analysis and solution in teams with decreasing influence of a lecturer and increasing initiative and responsibility of students determine the in-depth learning of students, their ability to critically and analytically think, carry out high quality researches, apply already possessed and newly gained knowledge in their activities, integrate advantages of team and self-directed learning, etc.
