LITERATURE REVIEW OF TALISH- A CONTROVERSIAL PLANT

Abstract

Talish is renowned for it’s great formulation Talishadi churna, a Ayurvedic remedy used for cough, digestive ailment including loss of appetite and anorexia. It is quoted by Brhat trayi several times but not included in most of the Ganas or Vargas. Acharya Sushruta emphasized it as ‘Sirovirechana dravya’, Acharya Charak mentioned it under Vaman dravya kalpa sangraha and in Ashtanga Samgraha it is quoted under Sodhanadi Gana. As per Nighantus it is a controversial plant having Swas- Kasa har property. In Bhavprakash Nighantu, Talishpatra is mentioned for both Abies pindrow Royle. and Taxus baccata Linn. Talish is one of the content of Talishadi Churna, Kalyanak Ghrit,Taijovatyadi Ghrit etc formulations given in Charak chikitsa sthana. Samangadi Tail, Kalyanak Ghrit, Talishadi Ghrit etc. are the formulations given by Acharya Sushruta in which Talish is one of the ingredient. In Astanga Hridaya, preparations like Talish Vati, Khadiradi Ghrit, Vyoshadi Vati etc. contain Talish as one of the content. Similarly in Harita Samhita, Bhel samhita, Ashtanga Samgraha,Kashyap Samhita, Bhavprakash Samhita, Chakradutta, Yogaratnakar, Bhaishajya Ratnavali various therapeutically important preparations of Talish are given. In various Nighantus like Dhanvantari Nighantu, Kaideva Nighantu, Bhavpraksh Nighantu, Raj Nighantu etc. description of Talish in their respective varga/ Gana like Satpushpadi, Oshdhi, Karpuradi, Pipplayadi varga etc. have been given. In this article we are going to discuss complete literature review of Talish.
