Abstract

The Marija Piaseckaitė-Šlapelienė’s Lithuanian Bookshop in Vilna (Vilnius) and its Role in Distribution of Belarusian-language Print at 1906–1908 In 1906–1945 there was a Lithuanian bookshop of Marija Piaseckaitė-Šlapelienė in Vilna (Vilnius). Nowadays the building is preserved at the address Dominikonų g. 11. In 1906–1908 it was one of the distribution centres of Belarusian print: newspapers of Vilna called «Nasza dola», «Nasza niwa», books of St. Petersburg publishing house «Zahlianie sonca i ŭ naša akonca» as well as illegal Belarusian issues such as, for example, the collection of poems of a Belarusan poetess Ciotka «Skrypka bielorusska Haŭryly z Palacka» (Żółkiew, 1906). In 1907 there was a search in the bookshop because of the selling of Ciotka’s collection. The book was confiscated and a criminal case was open against PiaseckaitėŠlapelienė. Previously unknown facts were discovered in correspondence of PiaseckaitėŠlapelienė and her husband Jurgis Šlapelis in relation to their contacts with Belarusian organizations and leaders of Vilna at the beginning of the XX century.
