Lonizing Radiation Dose Rate Measurements in Central Nervous System Diseases
Journal Title: Journal of Neurological Sciences-Turkish - Year 2012, Vol 29, Issue 1
Abstract
Objective: To assess ionizing radiation dose rate in certain Central Nervous System patients with a commercially available Geiger-Müller (GM) survey meter. Material and method: A hundred neurosurgical ward patients, patiens in intensive care unit and out-patient with 25 healty human were evaluated in this study. Measurements were obtained at a distance from 5 up to 10mm from the right side of the neck near thyroid gland for intracranial involement. For the cervical, thoracal and lumbar locations involved site were used for each individual patients. Results: An average of 0.15 µSv/hr radiation were found for the patients group where as 0.13 µSv/hr for the healthy group. A statistically significant higher values obtained in infected, hydatid cyst, myelitis group of patients up to 0.27 µSv/hr (mean 0.20 µSv/hr ) (p<0.00001). Conclusion: Inflammation in CNS may cause increase in ionizing radioactivity.
