Machiavellianism in families: analysis of relationships between the machaiavellanism level of grown-up children and their parents

Abstract
Machiavellianism is the term describing personality syndrome that can be attributed to people who achieve their aims by interpersonal manipulation. Despite the extensive literature describing the differences between Machiavellians and non-Machiavellians, little is known about the biological and environmental determinants of Machiavellianism. The aim of the study was to examine whether between spouses and between parents and their children, there is a significant similarity in Machiavellianism.Heritability coefficient for this trait was also estimated. In the research participated 131biological families consisting of both parents and a child. The analyses were performed according to the age and sex of the children. There were positive correlations between Machiavellianism of spouses and between Machiavellianism of fathers and their children, especially sons. There was no similarity between parents and their children over the age of 20. The value of Machiavellianism heritability coefficient was 26% in the group of families with younger children, and 11% in the group of families with older children. It would be important to examine the specificity of environmental influences in the formation of Machiavellian personality in future research.
