MAN OF TWO PASSIONS. LIBRARIAN P. S. SHESTERIKOV’S (1859-1929) HERBARIUM COLLECTION

Abstract
The article focuses on two sides of life and work of former director of the library of the Novorosiiski University P. S. Shesterikov, who gave a lot for formation and development not only of the University library, but also library studies in the country. He was at the beginnings of foundation of the Odesa bibliographic society at the Novorosiiski University. He was a member of the Novorosiiski society of naturalists for 45 years, of which 12 (from 1904 till 1916) he was a secretary and an editor of the “Proceedings” of the Society. P. S. Shesterikov had two passions – books and plants. He dedicates his life to studying flora of Odesa uyezd of Kherson province although he hadn’t botanic education. His identification qualifier of plants inspite of its defects has educated more than one generation of students-biologists. P. S. Shesterikov started to gather his herbarium underlying of “Indentification qualifier of flora of Odesa outskirts” P. S. It is kept at the Botany Department of Biology Faculty and belongs to herbarium collection of the Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University. Actual content of herbarium of the ONU is more than 50 thousands specimens. Unique herbarium collection of plants was granted the National Heritage of Ukraine status. Newly published book “P. S. Shesterikov’s herbarium collection” (Odesa, 2014) written by group of scientists of Biology Faculty of the Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University, promoted the collection was recognizable not only among botanists, but specialists in other areas.
