Journal Title: Journal of Bone and Joint Diseases - Year 2018, Vol 0, Issue 0

Abstract

Introduction: We hereby report the results of multiple intramedullary Kirschner (K) wire xation in the treatment of femoral sha fractures in children aged between 5 and 13 years. Materials and Methods: A prospective study was performed where 256 patients between the age 5 and 13 years presenting with fracture sha of the femur were operated and closed reduction and xation with multiple intramedullary K wires was done. Results: The average age of patients was 8.4 years, and the average follow-up period was 30 months. All fractures united in 6–13 weeks with an average time to the union being 8.2 weeks. Full weight bearing was started at an average of 8.5 weeks. No signicant complication was observed in any of the cases except for leg length discrepancy in 9 patients. No varus or valgus angulation was observed. Wires were removed aer an average duration of 8.5 months. Conclusion: is is a simple procedure with very less blood loss, prevents prolonged immobilization due to Spica cast treatment and is cost effective too.
