Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 1
Abstract
Background: Thoracic injuries are widely ranging from simple contusion of chest wall or simple rib fracture to fatal rupture of heart from crushing injuries Advanced Trauma life support (ATLS) protocol forms the bedrock for the assessment and treatment prioritization of these patients. Aim: To study the management outcome of 180 thoracic injury cases studied at our hospital. Material and Methods: A total number of 180 patients with blunt trauma and penetrating chest injuries were included. History, primary survey and resuscitation were done simultaneously. X-ray chest-erect position was taken and subsequent management either operative or non-operative was done according to clinicradiological findings. Results: Out of 180 cases 99 had fracture ribs. Sixty-three patients had only fracture ribs as injury while 36 patients had associated complications like flail chest, pneumothorax, and hemopneumothorax.9 patients expired, remaining 171 patients were asked to attain OPD regularly. Conclusion: Chest trauma is an important public health problem and motor vehicle accident continues to be the major etiological factor for chest injuries. The majority of the chest traumas are successfully managed by tube thoracotomy and supportive measures as well.
