Abstract
The ongoing pressure exerted upon coastal zones can cause problems and threaten the sustainable development of these areas. In this context, the European Union issued a recommendation on integrated coastal area management (EU 2002/413/EC). This analysis assesses Spain's institutional framework and management policies for coastal zones. Essentially, I inventoried the most important legal acts concerning the coastal area, the institutions charged with its upkeep, and other relevant documents on the subject. It is my belief that Spain's experience, both as a member of the European Union, as well as in the field of coastal area management, can serve as a lesson to improve the sustainable administration of coastal regions throughout Europe, in general and Romania, in particular.
