MARIA GRZEGORZEWSKA’S VIEWS ON THE EDUCATION OF CHILDREN WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENTS

Journal Title: Szkoła Specjalna - Year 2010, Vol 2010, Issue 5

Abstract

The article discusses fundamental views of Maria Grzegorzewska – the creator of spe-cial education – on education and revalidation of children with hearing impairments. Maria Grzegorzewska studied these issues quite extensively basing her findings on direct observations of work with children with such disorders in Poland and abroad. At the same time, many of her recommendations were based on theoretical and practical deliberations referring to the whole population of people with disabilities. She developed in detail a theory according to which substitute representations formed as a specific compensation in the adaptation of children with hearing impairments to the world of hearing people. She emphasized the value of the method of work centers in relation to the specificity of the education and upbringing of deaf children. Maria Grzegorzewska’s views on the education of children with hearing impairments had significant value in the actions which were undertaken later for children with this disorder. The analysis of the scholar’s deliberations in relation to the issue under discussion shows that there are still recommendations to be carried out which are a challenge to modern surdopedagogy.
