Marriage Theme on Leyla Erbil's Stories

Abstract
Leyla Erbil is one of the genuine authors of Turkish literature with her use of literature and the themes she preferred. She uses a critical, ironic and combative discourse in her stories which she discusses the problems of women. Leylâ Erbil’s women characters also interrogates the oppressive social norms and rules of their period in a Marxist and Freudian tone. The women characters who do not interrogate the repressive structure of the male-dominated society and comply with them are criticized in her texts. In this article, the theme of marriage in some of Erbil’s books such as Hallaç, (1959) Gecede, (1968) and Eski Sevgili, (1977) is going to be scrutinized. The concept of marriage is going to be examined under four sub-headings: The Patriarchal Marriages, The Marriages Formed with the Sexuality Emphasis, The Marriages that Imprisoned Women to the Private Sphere and The Benefit-Oriented Marriages. In the meantime, the dilemmas and influences of the marriage for a woman is going to be evaluated in the framework of feminist theory. The institution of marriage that is built according to the rules of male-dominated society, the women who are abstracted from the public sphere and imprisoned to the special sphere and lastly the paternalistic world order are the topics which are going to be analyzed in this study.
