Massive right-sided hiatal hernia variation
Journal Title: International Journal of Anatomical Variations - Year 2019, Vol 12, Issue 1
Abstract
During routine cadaver dissection for academic purposes, a massive hiatal hernia was identified in an 84- year-old female cadaver. A herniation of abdominal contents was displaced into the right thoracic cavity, which contained the entire stomach, pyloric sphincter and portions of the greater and lesser omentums. Prior to death, there were no reports of significant functional abnormalities, although there were reports of gastrointestinal bleeding. This case presents a rare variant due to two factors: the size of the esophageal hiatus and the displacement of the hernia into the right side of the thoracic cavity. The hiatal surface area (HSA) in this case report was calculated to be almost three times the established average HSA in normal patients. The majority of reported paraesophageal hernias (PEH) are left-sided with little mention of right-sided PEH in the literature. This case report attempts to add to the body of literature detailing right-sided hiatal hernias.

Unilateral duplex ureter
A routine cadaveric dissection of a 77 year old female with metastatic breast cancer demonstrated an ectopic unilateral left duplex ureter. The duplicated ureters originated separately at the renal pelvis, communicating...
Morphological study on mitral valve chordae tendineae in the hearts of human fetuses
BACKGROUND: Mitral valve chordae tendineae (CTs) are filaments of connective tissue that attach the mitral valves to the papillary muscles, which contract and cause tension on these chordae, so as not to allow separation...
An unusual bilateral variation of the splenius capitis muscle: A case report
A bilateral variation of splenius capitis muscle was identified in a formalinfixed 25-week-old male human fetus during routine dissections at Mersin University, Medicine Faculty, and Department Anatomy laboratory. The va...
Multiple left accessory renal vessels
Anatomical variations of the abdominal aorta are common. Using standard techniques, abdominal and renal vessels were dissected and measured. Six accessory renal vessels were identified on the left. One accessory artery f...
Dual palmaris longus variation in which muscles originated from antebrachial fascia
Introduction: Palmaris longus originates from medial epicondyle and attaches to palmar aponeurosis. This muscle is largely used for tendon transfers by surgeons so understanding of its variations is necessary anatomists...
