MATERIAL TESTS OF TURBOCHARGER COMPONENTS TO ELIMINATE OPERATIONAL DAMAGE CAUSES

Abstract
In some types of cars a relatively high incidence of turbochargers failures are observed. The paper contains the basic tests results of the turbocharger shafts material from the selected combustion engines. The objective was to determine whether the cause of failure of one of the turbochargers can be associated with hidden material defects. The test program included testing fractures, and comparing microstructure and micro hardness of the material of the damaged turbocharger shaft with the second shaft from the undamaged turbocharger, removed from the same vehicle. The results of the tests did not eliminate the material cause of the damage, and it was found in particular that the test pieces had hidden material defects. From the material evaluation point of view, both shafts tested could not be classified as fit for further use.
