Mathematical modelling applied to evaluate groundwater resources in watershed areas – example from the groundwater aquifer MGWB 414 Zagnańsk

Abstract
Mathematical modelling was applied to solve the difficulties arising when the safe yields are evaluated together with exploitation characteristics of groundwater intakes located in a II-order watershed area of three river catchments. Application of proper boundary conditions and reconstruction of diversified groundwater flow patterns from a recharge zone to natural and anthropogenic drainage zones enabled the authors to obtain credible renewable resources of the groundwater aquifer MGWB 414 Zagnańsk, its safe yield and groundwater renewal coefficient, and to propose the optimum locations of groundwater intakes and their discharges. Moreover, connections were evaluated between groundwaters in the aquifer and surface flows as well as surrounding rock formations of highly diversified capacity, permeability and recharge.
