Measuring Socio Economic Status – search for a new alternative.
Journal Title: Stanley Medical Journal - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 3
Abstract
Context: SES has long been a prime predictive variable in epidemiological studies and as a variable driving health and dietary policies. There is a need for redefinition of some relevant items for indicating the SES accurately Aims: To compare MRSI Scale with the Modified Kuppuswamy scale for classifying Socio Economic Status. Settings and Design: Cross Sectional Study of the urban field practice area of the Medical College. Methods and Material: Data from 440 families catered by 2 ICDS centres are collected, for classifying each household’s Socio Economic Status by using two scales – the MRSI ( Chief Earner’s Education, number of standard 11 consumer durables possessed) and the Modified Kuppuswamy’s scale (Education, Occupation of the head of the household and per capita income adjusted for inflation). Statistical analysis used: The proportion of the five Socio Economic Status groups Upper, Upper middle, lower middle, upper lower and lower lower are given as percentages. The agreement is given by kappa statistics and the correlation by Spearman’s correlation co efficient. Results: The percentage of SES groups by both methods were almost similar with an agreement kappa k of 0.869 and a Spearman’s correlation coefficient r of 0.926. Conclusions: SES classification by MRSI scale can be considered equivalent to Kuppuswamy’s scale.
