MECHANISMS CONTROLLING CLIMATE VARIABILITY AT ATLANTIC-EUROPEAN SCALE
Journal Title: Present Environment and Sustainable Development - Year 2012, Vol 6, Issue 2
Abstract
The purpose of the present paper is to analyze the main patterns of Atlantic-European climate variability in the context of observed climate change conditions. In this respect, we have chosen multiple variables in grid points, as they were provided by the National Centre of Atmospheric Research (NCAR, USA). The variables taken into consideration are: sea level pressure (SLP), geopotential height, air temperature and specific humidity at different pressure levels (500, 700, 850 mb), over a 60 years’ time period (1950-2010). The Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOF) analysis was applied to identify the anomalies of the chosen variables, both for summer (June to August) and winter (December to February) seasons. The time coefficient series reveal both spatial and temporal variability modes. By using Man-Kendall and Pettitt non-parametric tests, we could also detect the general trends and change points of time coefficient series resulted. One of the most important circulation pattern that was identified is the North Atlantic Circulation, which becomes the main pattern of atmospheric circulation variability, at least in winter.

APPLICATIONS OF LAPLACE SPHERICAL FUNCTIONS IN METEOROLOGY
The work tries to show that Laplace spherical functions can be applied in meteorology, too. In other words, some cycles in the evolution of maximum and minimum daily temperatures in the air can be explained by either the...
HOME RANGE AND HABITAT SELECTION OF THE SARDINIAN WILDCAT (Felis silvestris libyca) IN AN AREA OF SOUTHERN SARDINIA
Four wildcat adult females and four adult males (Felis silvestris libyca, Forster 1780) were monitored with the radio-telemetric technique in several time periods from July 1994 to March 2002, in the faunal park of...

The paper presents the influence of aerosols and respectively that of the in situ resulted solions in dynamic halochambers on the staturo-ponderal growth and on some functional characteristics of children by practi...
CONSIDERATIONS ON RECENT FREEZING PHENOMENA ON BISTRIŢA AND BISTRICIOARA RIVERS
It is highly important to have a better knowledge of river systems during the seasons when air temperature drops below freezing point if we consider the difficulties posed to hydrotechnical exploitations and the destru...
ASPECTS REGARDING THE VARIABILITY OF THE LEVELS OF SIUTGHIOL AND TĂBĂCĂRIE LAKES
The present paper presents some issues regarding the variability of Siutghiol and Tăbăcărie lakes levels and some natural and anthropic factors which can influence this variability. The analysis is based on the processin...
