MECKEL’S DIVERTICULUM: THE INCIDENCE, GROSS AND MICROSCOPIC FEATURES; A CADAVERIC STUDY
Journal Title: International Journal of Anatomy and Research - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Meckel’s diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract due to persistence of omphalomesentric duct and it can present diagnostic and surgical challenges. The aim of this study is to find out the incidence of Meckel’s diverticulum among the cadavers of Indian origin and to observe its gross and microscopic features. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out on 45 Indian cadavers (38 males & 7 females) in the Department of Anatomy, JNIMS, Imphal, from 2010-2017. The incidence of Meckel’s diverticulum was determined and its gross and histological features were observed. Results: Meckel’s diverticulum was observed in 2.22% of the cases. It was 4 cm in length, 2cm in breadth and its tip was free without any connection with the umbilicus. Histologically, the tissue showed features similar to ileum. Conclusion: An adequate knowledge of embryological, pathological, radiological and clinical characteristics of Meckel’s diverticulum and so also of its incidence in a particular population is essential for the early and accurate diagnosis and effective surgical management of complicated cases.
MORPHOMETRY AND MORPHOLOGY OF GLENOID CAVITY OF SCAPULA
Introduction: The Glenoid cavity is regarded as the head of the scapula. The morphology of glenoid cavity is highly variable. It articulates with the head of the humerus at the glenohumeral joint. Shape and dimensions of...
RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF TYPES AND PREVALENCE OF MAXILLOFACIAL INJURIES: A CROSS-SECTIONAL COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHIC STUDY
Background: The incidence and epidemiological causes of maxillofacial trauma and facial fractures varies widely in different regions of the world. To reduce morbidity and mortality, early recognition of severe head traum...
MORPHOLOGICAL STUDY OF ORIGIN OF PROFUNDA FEMORIS ARTERY IN HUMAN CADAVERS
Background: Profunda femoris artery (PFA) is the largest and deep branch from the femoral artery. It is the chief blood supply to the extensor (anterior), flexor (posterior) and adductor (medial) compartments of thigh. I...
VARIATION IN BRANCH FREE LENGTH OF RENAL ARTERY AND ITS CLINICAL SIGNIFICANS: A 64-SLICE CT ANGIOGRAPHIC MORPHOMETRIC STUDY
Background: Length of renal artery is an important morphological parameter while performing surgeries in renal area. The present study was conducted to evaluate variations in length of renal artery. Materials and Methods...
HISTOMORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES OF HUMAN GUBERNACULUM IN THE MALE
Background: Gubernaculum and the events related to the descent of testis have been studied since17th century, from the time of John Hunter onwards. Most of the studies were done in the animals and there is paucity of inf...
