MEDIA SPACE: SPECIFICS OF LEGAL DEFINITION

Abstract

This article analyzes the existing definitions of media space in terms of a multidisciplinary approach. It means using scientific achievements of such sciences as social communication, psychology, journalism, mass communication, sociology, etc. Relevant knowledge and categories are determined in the paper to establish a more accurate picture of the media space as a virtual space. Particular attention is given to the “new media” as a qualitatively new media source, which requires specific research not only in sociology and journalism, but also in the law in the aim of regulation social relations that arise. There is reasoned the need of legislative consolidation and definition of the media space in the current conditions of information society. Media space is a part of information space which needs to be defined as the virtual sphere influenced human consciousness. The issue of information space is paid much more attention in the legislation of Ukraine. However, the separation of media space as part of the information space will enable the timely response to the dangers and threats that appear in the virtual space. The legal definition and specification of the properties of the media space are very important for the prevention of destructive impacts on human consciousness. This question was particularly actualized in the process of the formation of a global information society. The problem of defining this type of virtual space lies in the large number of its users, who use applications, social networks, and Internet sources almost constantly. In fact, people are under constant informational and psychological influence in media space.
