Abstract

Througho ut the histo ry of warfare, military leaders have recognized the potenti ally devastating cons equenc es of ailing armies. Outbreaks of disease among the ranks hav e contributed to the collapse of em pires and the falls of dynasti es. Even to day, w e are jus t one m utation aw ay from catastrophic consequenc es that wo uld literally reshape the world as we k now it. While it is true that the Wo rld Wars underscore the capacity of armed conflict amo ng world pow ers to spread diseas e on a glob al scale, they also highlight the medical advances that of ten accom pany modern w arf are. Herein, we reflect upon the role of the Wo rld W ars in establishing a trajec tory for mo dern medicine and posit an organiz ational role for our armed forces as a platform of cooperation in glob al public health.
