Medical and Multimedia Image Compression using Multi Resolution Transforms

Abstract

The development of image compression algorithms is the chief matter of concern in the field of image and video processing as the amount of data either in the form of images or videos, sent over internet is of elephant size. The need for efficient compression technique is the core issue since, the storage space and transmission time are to be as minimal as possible. This work examines the compression performance of the contourlet and shearlet transforms as they can sparsely represent the 2D data at different scales and directions. It is proved from the results that, the contourlet transform is able to give good compression ratio as well as low Mean Square Error (MSE) and the visual quality of the compressed and subsequently decompressed image also satisfies the subject criteria.
