Meeting of Antoni Kępiński’s and Karol Wojtyła’s conceptions in the light of phenomenology: inspirations for psychotherapy and psychiatry

Journal Title: Psychoterapia - Year 2012, Vol 163, Issue 4

Abstract

The aim of this article is to discuss and compare two complementary phenomenological conceptions, which might be useful in therapetical practice. In his work Kępiński created two original psychiatric ideas: „energetic-informational metabolism” model and axiological approach to psychiatry. On the other hand Karol Wojtyła in his main work „The acting person” describes the dynamic model of integration of a person in action. He stresses the differences between two types of dynamics in human nature: „I act” (action) and „something is happening in me” (activation). The author of this article proposes a correlation of the two models described above, in which on the top of their integration axis stands the dynamic „person-action” superior unity. This unity outlines „the top-down” voluntary direction of movement (according to the second phase of information metabolism) and penetrates through the psychosomatic unity as well as complexity, all the way down to cell structure. This relationship of person-action unity with dignity (arche-value) constitutes the axiological correlation. The meeting of these two original phenomenological conceptions allows for a deeper understanding of patients and can be yet another inspiration to psychotherapy and psychiatry as a science.
