Memory Dysfunction in Parkinson’s Disease

Journal Title: Journal of Neurological Sciences-Turkish - Year 2006, Vol 23, Issue 1

Abstract

Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease (IPD) is characterized by a triad of motor symptoms; bradikinesia, rigidity and resting tremor. Previous studies have demonstrated that, the motor symptoms are frequently accompanied by cognitive dysfunction, and memory is one of the most commonly affected cognitive function in these patients. The cognitive impairment has been shown to be related to age at onset of the disease, age at examination and disease duration. There is no consensus regarding the effects of dopaminergic treatment on cognition in IPD. In order to further analyze this subject we evaluated the visual and verbal memory functions in 30 IPD (21 male, 9 female) patients without dementia and 30 age and gender matched healthy controls. We found a global detoriation in both verbal and visual memory functions in the IPD patients (p<0.05). The memory function was worse in patients with later onset of disease, longer duration of disease an in patients with higher disability scales. As a conclusion, verbal and visual memory impairment can be an early finding in IPD, it correlates with level of motor impairment and there is no improvement with dopaminergic treatment.
