Mergers and Acquisitions of Metallurgical Enterprises in the Global Economy

Abstract
Today, the metallurgical sector is one of the most important manufacturing industries in Poland. Its largest production centres are located in the Silesian and Mazovian regions. The Polish metallurgical industry, dominated by ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, is mainly oriented towards steel production. Because of its manufacturing quality and technological solutions aimed at reducing pollution emission levels and energy consumption, the metallurgical sector is among the most modern sectors in Europe. On the one hand, this development has been necessitated by quality requirements made by the main consumer of steel – the automotive industry; on the other hand, it has been supported by foreign investments and EU funds, which were used to finance innovative technological solutions. Currently, the sector is undergoing progressive consolidation. The purpose of the article is to analyse causes of mergers and acquisitions in the metallurgical sector in the world, with special emphasis on the EU countries. The author analyses the phenomenon in structural cross-classifications: the number of acquiring and acquired companies, the number of countries in which mergers and acquisitions took place, time and distribution of mergers and acquisitions by year and country.
