Metafizyczny obraz miłości w The Good-Morrow J. Donne’a

Journal Title: Prace Literaturoznawcze - Year 2013, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

The Good-Morrow glorifies love by focusing on its absolute values. The lyrical ego has found fulfillment in true love and simultaneously got an insight into all its dimensions. The poem consists of three parts relating to the lovers’ past, presence and future. To il-lustrate various benefits derived from love Donne clearly divides their lives into two periods: before and after the advent of this perfect feeling. The first stanza may be re-ferred to as reflections upon the quality of existence devoid of true love. The following parts dwell upon the notion of the lovers’ souls waking up to the ultimate quality of love that entirely changes their perception of the world and opens unlimited areas expressed in the world „everywhere”. However, why is the poem named ‘meta-physical’? What philosophical concept of the universe and what kind of spiritual ele-ment emerge from its verses? It is due to the exceptional unity achieved through love, in which the physical and spiritual aspects are inseparable, that lovers can be raised to a superior position where they will experience immortality. Love described by Donne is definitely metaphysical, as it removes the boundary between earthly life and the afterlife by defeating death and creating a special being that encompasses not only material but also immaterial space.
