Journal Title: Erciyes Üniversitesi İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi Dergisi - Year 2017, Vol 50, Issue 2
Abstract
The discipline of Labor Economic and Industrial Relations (LEIR) has great importance in the regulation of the relations between the labor and management. In today’s environment where there are intensive discussions about unions, LEIR departments provide theoretical and conceptual education about unionization, unionism, and union history, and their graduates have an opportunity to work in unions. Therefore, it is important to reveal how the students studying at this department conceptualize the concept of union through metaphors. Thus, it will be possible both to observe this disputed period and to reveal how the education about unions affect their metaphors about the concept of union. In this study, final year students in the department of LEIR in Ankara, Kocaeli, and Tokat were asked to develop metaphors related to concept of union. Their responses were taken in written forms. Categorical analysis, one of the content analysis types, was used to understand their views. When the themes emerged were examined, it was observed that the participants explained the social functions of the unions depending on their economic and profit functions although they were studying in the department of LEIR and had a chance to work in unions after graduation. Within this context, it is possible to express that LEIR education has a positive but limited effect on the minds and perceptions of the participants. It can also be stated that the local dynamics, family structure, ideology, and cultural-sociological codes of the participants were more effective and deterministic than the education given in LEIR.
