Microbial biotechnology for remediation of aquatic habitats polluted with chromium
Journal Title: Aquaculture, Aquarium, Conservation & Legislation - International Journal of the Bioflux Society - Year 2008, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
Chromium may occur in nine different forms of oxidation ranging from –II to +VI, with forms II, III and VI as the most commonly encountered. In Cluj county, chromium pollution dates well back in time and has caused important dysfunction to the mechanical-biological wastewater purification station of the city of Cluj (Coșier & Diță 1996). The purpose of this study was to develop one microbial method able to reduce hexavalent chromium (mobile, permeable to cell membrane, carcinogenic and mutagenic) (Ishikawa et al 1994) to the trivalent form (insoluble and an essential element for humans) (Song et al 2006). Different sources of chromium-reducing bacteria and many sources of carbon and energy added to the Kvasnikov mineral basal medium (Komori et al 1990) with increasing amount of chromate (200-1000 mg/l) were tested. Two bacterial strains, able to reduce even 1000 mg chromate/l, were isolated in pure culture. For one of these bacterial strains, we determined the optimum conditions for the reduction of Cr (VI).

The Romanian perspective on geothermal energy resources. The chemistry of the geothermal waters from Oradea Triassic aquifer
In 2008, the European Commission put forward a proposal for a new directive (COM (2008) 30) on renewable energies to replace the existing measures adopted in 2001. According to the proposal, each member state should incr...
Biological performance of Asian catfish (Clarias batrachus) (Teleostei, Clariidae) cultured in recirculating aquaculture system
The study was conducted to assess the biological performance of Asian catfish in RAS by using 4 tanks (3 culture tanks and 1 sedimentation tank) measuring 2 m x 1 m x 0.60 m with a volume of 900 liters and bio-filter as...
Relative Warp and Correlation Analysis based on Distances of the Morphological shell shape patterns among freshwater gastropods (Thiaridae: Cerithimorpha)
Shell morphology has various details in their architecture that contributes effectively to gastropod identification and classification. A conventional approach has been made to study shell morphology using descriptions o...
Cultivation of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata Linnaeus, 1758) in low salinity inland brackish geothermal water
In the course of attempting to culture gilthead sea bream in inland brackish geothermal water, indoor and outdoor research studies have been ongoing from early 2006 at the "Bengis Centre for Desert Aquaculture" of the In...
