MIGRATION EXPERIENCES OF MIDDLE-CLASS SYRIAN ASYLUM SEEKERS IN ISTANBUL

Abstract
Migrants mostly meet various sociocultural handicaps in the new region in the duration of forced migration. Difficulties come with becoming obligatorily to flee from the familiar environment and to settle in a new place.. Migration is a social phenomenon that influenceing not only the community of asylum seekers but also local population. This study aims at evaluation on the forced migration period of middle class Syrian asylum seekers who leaving their home and starting tol ive in Istanbul. Conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews in the small purposive sample were analized with a comparative technique in the qualitative research methods. Main findings of the study are the role of family reunification, border proximity and cultural similarity in the decison making for the destination place as well as entegration problems mostly related with prejudiced attidues of local population towards the newcomers.
