Mixed Ligand Complexes of PolypyridineRu(II) with 2,6- Diacetylpyridine and 2- Aminopyridine: Synthesis and Characterization

Abstract

Four mixed ligand complexes of polypyridyl (1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2’-bipyridine) Ru(II) with 2,6-diacetylpyridine and 2-aminopyridine were prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, infrared and electronic spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, 1H NMR and molar conductivity studies. The microanalyses data gave satisfactory results which conformed to the calculated values. The infrared spectra revealed coordination to the metal through the carbonyl oxygen of the acetyl group of 2,6-diacetylpyridine and the nitrogen of the (-N-H2 ) amino group of the 2-aminopyridine. The electronic spectra of the complexes show absorption in the visible region between 427 nm – 673 nm which are attributed to metal-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) state involving a metal d-orbital and the π* -orbital of a ligand. The higher energy values bands for these complexes appeared between 218 – 478 nm. The fragmentation patterns from the ESI mass spectra gave values that show consistency with the molecular frameworks of the compounds. The conductivity measurements revealed that the complexes are conducting as 1:2 electrolytes.
