Modeling the Political and Phenomenological Methodology

Abstract

The article deals with the significance and necessity of applying the phenomenological methodology for modeling the political sphere. It is noted that the necessity of applying this methodology is caused by the nature of the public sphere, which is “fluid” and open to the littlest influences. The study explicates the general concept of the modeling procedure and its more specific meaning in regard to the political sphere. This has led to the conclusion that the latter modeling can be carried out in two ways: through rational prediction of the consequences of actions, as well as through specific configuration of the public space. It is noted that the second strategy has more heuristic potential to shape the political sphere as it allows direct involvement of individuals in the formation of political decisions and actions. To reinforce this hypothesis, the concept of artistic activism of the Belgian political thinker Chantal Mouffe is used. The essence of the concept of artistic activism is that through the modeling of the museum space individuals are involved in political life. The purpose of this modeling is to reach the individual at the affective (emotional) level and “awaken” him to active political action. At the same time, Chantal Mouffe does not specifically develop a methodology for reconfiguration of artistic spaces in order to attract them to sociopolitical criticism, but gives some examples of such “struggles” conducted by some European artistic institutions. The formulation of the purpose and tasks of modeling indicates the need for using the phenomenological methodology for museum spaces reconfiguration. Phenomenology can provide a noematic description of experiencing political and social phenomena, as well as clarify the specifics of the artistic space arrangement.
