Modern aspects of conservative therapy for urinary incontinence and preservation of renal function in children with spina bifida

Journal Title: Здоров`я дитини - Year 2018, Vol 13, Issue 6

Abstract

Congenital neural tube defects are one of the most common congenital malformations, in which several organs and systems are affected. Due to the improvement of surgical treatment, the survival of these patients has increased. At present, the development of a neurogenic bladder is an important problem affecting the quality of life and its duration in this group of children. Neurogenic bladder dysfunction cause irreversible pathological changes in the upper and lower urinary tract. Secondary lesion of the bladder wall, development of vesicoureteral reflux, hydronephrosis, renal scarring are the main links of the pathological process leading to renal failure and death. Therefore, early active monitoring and treatment of these children is important for preserving renal function. The active use of clean intermittent catheterization and anticholinergic drugs, if necessary, are the main methods of conservative urological management of spina bifida in children. The search for literature was carried out using the PubMed database.
