Modern Devlet Aklının İnşası Sürecince Ulusal Kimliği Yaratma Mücadelesi

Abstract
The sovereign in modern states acquires its legitimate power not from divine authority but from the ideal of homogenous and secular social structure which it identifies as nation. In this paper, the national consciousness that emerged in the final period of Ottoman Empire is examined within the framework of the concept of modern nation-state. The course of constructing a new national identity and a new state from the period of demise of the empire to the foundation of the republic had led to a variety of approaches. This article will first survey the approaches on the construction of the Turkish national identity set forth by the nationalist movements organized at the margins of the empire. In this regard two different traditions and nation-building ideologies represented by Yusuf Akçura and Ziya Gökalp in the course of constructing new national identity will be the focus of the article. Then I will demonstrate how these movements influenced the transformation of the Turkish modern raison d’état from 1923 to present.
