Monitoring and prediction of methane emission in the longwall and possibilities to control the longwall system
Journal Title: Mining – Informatics, Automation and Electrical Engineering - Year 2016, Vol 525, Issue 1
Abstract
Monitoring systems which are applied in mining today are based on solutions developed in 1990s. The knowledge about methane emission from rock mass and goafs, occurring during the longwall-based coal cutting process, has been well systematized. Normally, methane concentration is measured at the face ends. However, in the light of accidents which have happened over the last few years, such a solution does not see to be sufficient in certain conditions. Extra measurement points inside the longwall make it possible to monitor methane concentration as they enable a faster reaction to methane hazards in this area. What is more, it is possible to have shortterm prediction of methane hazards of relatively high accuracy. The paper presents methane hazard monitoring methods that have been used so far. It also describes a proposed system for measuring and predicting methane concentration in the longwall and for using the obtained knowledge about methane concentrations to control the operations of a cutter-loader. Finally, the author presented the results of experimental research to illustrate the efficiency of the system.

Analysis of cutting picks trajectory and cutterhead vibrations of roadheader with use of high-speed cameras
In order to identify the behavior of cutting picks during the process of mining with the use of a roadheader’s cutterhead, an optic system has been employed. The main elements of the system were high-speed cameras. In co...
Computer-aided design of cutting heads
The design of cutting heads is a complex process in which it is necessary to perform multiple recalculations of complicated formulas and to correct the assumptions of input data. The purpose is to provide high efficiency...
Significance of cutting process parameters as related to improving dynamic state of roadheader and minimizing power consumption
The process of mechanical excavation, especially that of hard rocks, is very dynamic. This results in heavy loads and vibrations in the cutting system of a roadheader, the drive units of the mechanism related to the exca...
Corroded steel support friction joint load capacity studies as found in Piast-Ziemowit coal mine
This article presents the load capacity study results of the corroded friction joints obtained during heading relining conduction. The main goal of the study was to determine the operational characteristics of heavily co...
High-speed optical methane concentration meter with the dust compensation of mine atmosphere
We tested an optical-absorption methane concentration meter for coal mines conditions. We studied conversion characteristics and evaluated its speed performance and proposed a method of dusty coal mines air multiplicativ...
