MORPHOLOGICAL STUDY OF FISSURE AND LOBES IN FETAL LUNGS
Journal Title: International Journal of Anatomy and Research - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 1
Abstract
Background: The lungs are the essential organs of respiration which are divided into lobes and fissures. Fissures help in a more uniform expansion of lungs. Knowledge about the fissures is helpful in appreciation of lobar anatomy and for locating bronchopulmonary segments and it is important for anatomists, pediatrician, radiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons and also for clinicians. Materials and methods: 50 spontaneously aborted fetuses were collected from labour room of Obstretrics and Gynaecology Department of PSG Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre, Coimbatore and the study was conducted in the Department of Anatomy. The morphological details of fissures and lobes of the lungs and presence of any variation in the fissures and accessory fissure were studied. Results: Out of 50 specimens in the age group of 10 weeks to 39 weeks of gestation, the horizontal fissure was incomplete in 35 fetuses (68%), complete in 14 fetuses (28%), absent in 1 fetus (2%) and accessory fissure was found in 1 fetus (2%). Conclusion: Awareness of the variations in the lobes and fissures of the lungs is important for radiologists for proper diagnosis and to surgeons for performing segmental lung resections.
VARIANT FORMATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF MEDIAN NERVE
During routine cadaveric dissection while teaching undergraduate medical students, the median nerve on the left upper limb of a 60 year old female cadaver showed presence of an accessory lateral root arising from lateral...
A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF NUMBER AND POSITION OF PAPILLARY MUSCLES AND CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE
Introduction: Papillary muscles are the conical muscle masses project into the cavity of ventricle and are inserted into the valve cusps by chordae tendinae. They prevent the cusps from being forced back into the atrium...
ANATOMICAL VARIATIONS OF SCIATIC NERVE BIFURCATION IN HUMAN CADAVERS
Background: the sciatic nerve is largest and thickest nerve in human body. It originates from L4-S3 roots of sacral plexus. It consists of 2 components namely tibial and common peroneal nerves. It passes through greater...
A STUDY OF FEMORAL NECK ANTEVERSION ANGLE IN CENTRAL INDIAN POPULATION: A GUIDE FOR ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERIES INCLUDING HIP ARTHROPLASTY
Background: Femoral neck anteversion angle is the angle which measures the anterior rotation of the neck of the femur around the shaft. Its variation in the various population groups is attributed to various factors such...
A CASE REPORT OF BICUSPID AORTIC VALVE WITH REFERENCES TO ANATOMICAL AND EMBRYOLOGICAL ASPECTS
Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is the most common malformation in congenital cardiac disease with the prevalence of 1-2%. In Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), the aortic valve has only two cusps instead of three cusps. In this p...
